Pick City’s NFL Week 1 Picks

The first week of the NFL season is upon us, and it’s perhaps the toughest week to project along with Week 17. However, Pick City still has a few plays for the first week of the year, and we’ll also give opinions on every game. We’ll also give a three-team, 10-point teaser every week.

3* Texans -5

The Texans have won this division in two straight seasons, and they boast one of the best defenses in the league. J.J. Watt returns after being injured last season, and the front seven should wreak havoc on the Jaguars’ offensive line. Tom Savage is starting for Houston, and he should manage the game well enough for the Texans to win comfortably. Plus, Blake Bortles is the other quarterback in this game. It always feels good being on the opposite side of Blake Bortles. The Pick City Pick: Texans 27, Jaguars 16.

3* Chargers +3.5

I’m big on the Chargers this season, and I even have them winning the AFC West. This team suffered brutal injuries a season ago, and I think Philip Rivers has one of the best seasons of his career in 2017. On the flip side, the Broncos relied heavily on their defense to carry them a season ago, and it’s unlikely that defense will be as dynamic this year. The Denver offense struggled often last season, and I’m not expecting any improvement from an offense led by Trevor Siemian. The Pick City Pick: Chargers 24, Broncos 23.

2* Redskins +1.5

Washington opened up as a 2.5-point favorite, but sharps have pounded the Eagles and Philly is now a slight favorite on the road. The Eagles are a popular playoff sleeper this year, and the Redskins are a regression candidate. However, Washington has defeated Philly in five straight meetings, and I trust Kirk Cousins and Jay Gruden at home over Carson Wentz and Doug Pederson. The Pick City Pick: Redskins 30, Eagles 27.

2* Titans -2.5

Both the Titans and the Raiders are public teams this year, and I’m not a big fan of either. But I do like Tennessee in this matchup against an Oakland defense that wasn’t very good in 2016 despite having Khalil Mack roaming around. I think the Titans can control the clock with their running game, and I look for the Raiders’ offense to look a bit sluggish as Marshawn Lynch tries to shake the rust off after his “retirement.” The Pick City Pick: Titans 28, Raiders 24.

2* Bengals -3

This will likely be a tough, defense battle that could end up determining a Wild Card spot. Joe Flacco isn’t 100 percent healthy, and the Baltimore offense had difficulty moving the ball last year. The Ravens have also been devastated by injuries in the preseason. Cincinnati will be without defenders Adam Jones and Vontaze Burfict, but I think the Bengals’ defense can still contain a limited Baltimore offense. The Pick City Pick: Bengals 16, Ravens 12.

We aren’t putting plays on these games, but here’s who we would take if we had to pick a side.

Jets +9

Falcons -6.5

Cardinals -2

Steelers -9.5

Rams -3.5

Seahawks +3

49ers +5.5

Giants +6

Vikings -3.5

NFL Teaser of the Week

A three-team, 10-point teaser pays out -110. So, you’d risk $110 to win $100, and you have to win all three games to win. This column is being published on Friday, so we missed out on taking the Patriots +1 yesterday like everyone else in the country.

Steelers +1/2 (from -9.5)

Chargers +13.5 (from +3.5)

Texans +5 (from -5)
